Helen Acklam is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores ideas and questions emerging from an exploration of the self and identity and the connections between personal experience and larger social and political structures. “The pandemic gifted me the time and space to think about the loss of my baby, at birth, when I was a teenager. The circumstances and the era meant that I had no voice or agency; the men ‘took care’ of everything. Returning to this South Wales mining village, I am now reclaiming, through the soil, a body of work that allows me to find an expression of the longing, the ache, and the validity of being a mother. I am a mother.”
